My research is based
around aspects of mobile computing and Java, with an application focus
in Mobile Learning. I am an active member
of the Centre for Mobile Computing, which was established in 2006 from
the previous Mobile Computing Research Group. I am also interested in
research into agile software development. One of my areas of work
related to agile is the Agile Hour Workshop
Editorial Board: International
Journal of Web Portals
Second
Life
In
2007/8 we ran a summer project to give Massey a presence in Second Life
to support our introductory IT paper, Computer Applications and the
Information Age. You can see a virtual tour of this facility on YouTube:
Consulting and Training
I provide consultancy
and professional software training services on behalf on the Institute of Information and Mathematical Sciences. I specialise
in Java technologies, agile programming techniques and test driven development.
In most cases I deliver this work under the auspices of Software Education Associates.
Mobile
and Blended Learning
This project is intended
to develop a mobile solution for professional learning using adaptive
web applications. An application server has been purchased and installed
to enable the deployment and testing of mobile learning content via
the project's domain name mclassroom.com
One simple system
running on this server is the Information Technology paper summary.
This provides both an adaptive
web interface for mobile devices and a downloadable Java Micro Edition
version.
I have recently
been working on a series of books about web development. The first two
of these were published by Cengage Learning (London) in 2008; Dynamic
Web Application Development using PHP and MySQL (written with Simon
Stobart of Teesside University in the UK) and Dynamic Web Application
Development using XML and Java. The third book in the series, Dynamic
Web Application Development using ASP.NET, is currently being written
in collaboration with Andy Gravell of the University of Southampton
(UK) and is due for publication next year.
I also recently
co-edited a book with my colleague Dr. Hokyoung Ryu, Innovative
Mobile Learning: Techniques and Technologies, published by IGI
Global.
