The Peer Mentoring Groups Programme
The Peer Mentoring (PM) Programme offers content-based support to students enrolled in large first year papers. The sessions are led by trained senior students who have achieved highly in the paper themselves and who attend the lectures during semester.

Sessions reinforce the content of the course by involving students in active discussion and problem-solving in small groups in a casual and relaxed environment. Students are encouraged to bring along their own questions.
The peer mentors also discuss relevant test preparation strategies and can give tips on study skills useful for succeeding in their subject. The peer mentors do not re-teach concepts and the sessions complement the classes and tutorials run by staff.
Many students have found the best use of the peer mentoring groups is to make them a routine part of their personal study routine.
Attending the peer mentors' study group sessions helps students get off to an excellent start. Data collated over five years show that most of the students who attended the sessions consistently achieved higher grades than those who did not attend.
The peer mentor study groups are free, friendly, flexible and optional and all students taking first year papers are invited to participate. The PM group sessions are course-specific and run at least twice a week in many first year papers on the three campuses, Albany, Manawatu, and Wellington.
