Peer Mentoring Group FAQ
Do I have to register?
It is easy to register online but you can just go to a session and join up that way too.
How do I know when the groups are on?
The study group leaders will stand up in class and say when they are in the first 2-3 weeks.
Check the Albany, Manawatu, and Wellington pages.
Are peer mentoring group sessions just for people who are having difficulty with the subject?
No. Peer mentors find that most students use the sessions to get extra hints and practice and some of them are already good at the subject.
What happens at a session?
If no-one brings any questions, the mentors will go over course material or problems and calculations that they know are a bit tricky. They will try to get everyone to work in groups to solve a problem or brainstorm all the different points relating to a topic. That way everyone there gets to take part and gets a full summary.
Can I take a question to sessions?
Yes. Study group sessions work best when the students ask lots of questions or bring in the problems they are stuck on.
Do I have to go every week?
No, some students just go when they have difficulty. However, a previous year's results showed that most of the students who attended regularly got high grades.
Will the peer mentor help with an assignment question?
Peer mentors do not work with students on the actual questions set in an assignments. They will however help students with problems and assignment tasks that are very similar.
Will the lecturer tell me if I should go?
No, the lecturer may remind the class about the Peer Mentoring Group sessions but the sessions are available for all students. Students decide for themselves if and when they will go.
How many sessions are there each week?
There are 2 sessions per week for most subjects. Some papers have 4 sessions per week.
